New Chapters: Transforming Community Libraries in Conwy

The Community Library Network in Conwy are thrilled to announce the successful completion of the building phase of the “New Chapters” project, a transformative initiative following a collaborative bid to the UK Government, via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and Conwy County Borough Council Community Regeneration Key Fund. This project has revitalised three community libraries, turning them into vibrant community hubs that cater to local needs and foster a sense of pride and wellbeing.

Kinmel Bay Library has undergone a remarkable transformation, thanks to the dedication of the Friends of Kinmel Bay Community Library. The work was undertaken by  Law Construction who worked from guidelines of a scope of works developed by NJSR Architects, Manchester, and Opening the Book. The library now has a new roof, improved brickwork, and a Pyramid Roof Light. The interior has been completely refurbished with new carpets, furniture, and a fresh coat of paint. While the main building works were being carried out further work was also carried out which was funded by the National Lottery.

Morris Jones, Chair of Kinmel Bay Community Library Group, expressed, “Our customers are overwhelmed and delighted with the new look. The feedback to the Trustees has been positive, knowing that we are able to maintain the library for many years to come.”

Judith, a staff member, added, “The children from the school visit were really impressed with all the books and several built up large piles of books that they wanted to borrow! They liked being able to sit inside the rocket and on sofas.”

The Friends of Kinmel Bay Community Library Trustees would welcome anyone who would like to become a Trustee or Volunteer to help to develop the library.

Uwchaled Library has also seen significant improvements, funded by the UKSPF and the Brenig Wind Farm Fund. Local contractors have worked diligently to plaster and paint the walls, install new lighting and carpets. The library now features colourful and modern furniture, creating a welcoming and warm environment.

Councillor Gwennol Ellis, Chair of the Uwchaled Community Library Group, said, “Uwchaled Library has been completely transformed following the award of this grant and also a grant from the Brenig Wind Farm Fund. As one visitor said, ‘It doesn’t look like the same place!'”

Medi, the Library Manager, shared her excitement on the first day of reopening, “It’s been wonderful so far. The school came (25 pupils and 5 adults) as well as representatives from the community group. The school had a fantastic introduction from Gwennol and Rhian, and spent a good hour here and it was lovely to see them browsing, reading and sharing books.”

Llanfairfechan Library has tackled longstanding damp issues and undergone a complete redecoration. The new library furniture is both functional and attractive, allowing staff to present books in an enticing manner.

Huw Lloyd Jones, Project Lead for the Community Library Network and Chair of Llanfairfechan Community Library Group, stated, “In Llanfairfechan, we’re delighted with our newly refurbished library. Our contractors have done a great job in tackling the damp issues in the old stone building, redecorating throughout and laying new carpet.”

Claire, a staff member, commented on the community’s response, “There’s an overwhelming sense of gratitude from the community on the investment into the village. Several people have said how lucky we are to have such a fantastic place and how special it feels to be in there.”

The “New Chapters” project has not only improved the physical infrastructure of these libraries but also introduced innovative approaches to community-based marketing and volunteer engagement. A new volunteer framework has been established, empowering individuals to develop their skills and contribute to the delivery and expansion of library services.
