The Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge is held annually during the school holidays, at a time when children’s interest in books and reading can dip if they’re not encouraged to read for pleasure.

What is The Summer Reading Challenge?

The annual Summer Reading Challenge is delivered by The Reading Agency. It is supported in Wales by the Books Council of Wales, thanks to funding from Welsh Government. This year’s theme of ‘Story Garden’ aims to connect children with adventure through both reading and nature.

In partnership with local libraries, the scheme aims to prevent the “summer dip” learning loss many children experience over the holidays when they aren’t in school. With libraries’ support, it provides a free, fun way to keep young minds active.

You can register and take part at your local library, where you can choose books to read in order to complete the challenge. You can also take part digitally on the Summer Reading Challenge pages.
